![]() ![]() But I also think this whole comparison is invalid in a way. I agree with Sheth that it takes as much work to be at the top in Starcraft as it takes to be at the top in chess. I know how much strategic depth there is in Brood War-it was a great game. And a game like Go has probably fewer complexities by your definition than chess, but it's equally deep.Įdit: I watched Brood War in college, starting with JulyZerg winning the golden mouse, and I stopped watching when SC2 came out. But no one is putting them in the conversation for great strategy games. I'm also going to note that other video games like Spelunky and The Binding of Isaac have potentially infinite "complexities to consider," being procedurally generated. So even if there are more possibilities to consider, players certainly don't have the time to consider them all. You can't take too long to make your decision and in many cases you have to act on instinct. Starcraft, like Sheth said above, would be more analogous to blitz chess. If GMs could be confident they were making the best decision in ten seconds, why take 30 minutes? If you insist on comparing chess and Starcraft (which I still believe is apples to oranges), the fact that it can take a GM 30 minutes or more to make a strategic decision shows the amount of strategic depth in the game.
